Some of the oldest questions in Science are “How far away are the stars?”, “Does space go on forever?” and “Did the Universe have a beginning?” Paul Fellows shows how astronomers have tackled these questions and how science reveals some very profound truths about the Universe.
Having built his first telescope aged 14 and experiencing the “wow” moment of seeing the rings of Saturn for the first time, he has been stargazing for 45 years. From his own private observatory he images galaxies, clusters, nebulae and planets. Many of his own pictures appear in his talks.
Paul chairs the Cambridge Astronomical Association. He presents the open evenings at the University of Cambridge and is frequently invited as guest speaker for Fred Olsen.
He holds a Masters degree in Natural Sciences a post-graduate degree in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and is an elected Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the Institute of Engineering and Technology. Twice a winner of the Queen’s award for Technology, he was recently presented a lifetime innovation award by Emmanuel College Cambridge and in 2025 was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the public understanding of science and astronomy.
His talks aim to appeal to people of all levels from the complete beginner who wants to know where to start, yet hopefully adding something even for the more knowledgeable.
