Crown Green Bowling

The support recieved by the Leeds Phil & Lit society was put towards the cost of training materials to support new players trying Crown Green Bowling for the first time and to help improve those who have but need more support in improving technique.

We have designed a training manual with both the rules and tips on how to achieve the best possible bowl and different outcomes if different techniques were used suitable for all ages and abilities.

We have supported players from 5 years old through to 90 year old and was part of a wider project to increase awareness of Crown Green Bowling overall including the production of informational videos. This part of the project is still ongoing and we look forward to sharing more about this in the New Year.

The project has also helped support other projects, and team successes, by having additional training aids to help both the players and those coaching new players has been instrumental in the achievements of our new teams gaining promotion in their first year in two leagues and winning the Cup in the Saturday league.

This has helped boost confidence in new players both in terms of capability for bowling and in their personal life.

They have been extremely helpful for open days such as Heritage Open Days week events and introducing new players and supporting other groups such as Mental Health Mates Leeds who have visited us on several occasions with their group as an alternative to their walking meet ups.

Overall the project has been very successful and part of a much wider movement to increase awareness of our wonderful sport of Crown Green bowls and in return secure the bowling greens we have in Leeds for many more years to come!

Through our work this year we were nominated for Leeds Compassionate City Awards – we were nominated in two categories but were shortlisted and recieved Highly Commended under the Community Sports Project of the Year 2023!
