Penny Wainwright is a freelance editor and writer. Her work has ranged from editing a book on steel box-girder bridges to articles for Cosmopolitan magazine. She was a council member of the Leeds Phil. and Lit. for a number of years. The image above is the cover of her recent book which chronicles the rise and operation of Charles Thackray Ltd.
When Charles Thackray and Henry Wainwright bought a Leeds retail pharmacy in 1902, they could hardly have foreseen that in less than a century it would expand to employ more than 700 people, and have markets all over the world. Their corner shop grew into one of Britain’s principal medical companies, manufacturing drugs and instruments, and pioneering the large-scale hip replacement prosthetic, which has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
